Cost-Effectiveness of CT Screening in the National Lung Screening Trial

Background

The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) showed that screening with low-dose computed tomography (CT) as compared with chest radiography reduced lung-cancer mortality. We examined the cost-effectiveness of screening with low-dose CT in the NLST.

Conclusions

We estimated that screening for lung cancer with low-dose CT would cost $81,000 per QALY gained

Tobacco Regulation, smoking prevalence and the implications for E-Vapour Products

Smoking prevalence is the most important success criterion for tobacco regulation

Declines in smoking rates in the 70s and 80s reflect the growing awareness and acceptance of government health messages

Smoking prevalence has been levelling out in most places since 2000

No correlation was found between the Tobacco Control Score [5] and smoking prevalence

No evidence that the decline in smoking prevalence has been accelerated by tobacco regulation

The Denormalisation from FCTC has been much less effective than commonly believed

Smoking prevalence was found to decline consistently where a viable choice/alternative product was presented to consumers.

The Swedish and Norwegian experiences with snus may demonstrate the potential

The slow death of purposeless walking

A number of recent books have lauded the connection between walking - just for its own sake - and thinking. But are people losing their love of the purposeless walk?

Walking is a luxury in the West. Very few people, particularly in cities, are obliged to do much of it at all. Cars, bicycles, buses, trams, and trains all beckon.

Instead, walking for any distance is usually a planned leisure activity. Or a health aid. Something to help people lose weight. Or keep their fitness. But there's something else people get from choosing to walk. A place to think.

Wordsworth was a walker. His work is inextricably bound up with tramping in the Lake District. Drinking in the stark beauty. Getting lost in his thoughts... Read more:
